The 10 Best Awesome Game Recording Software in 2017

There can be no doubt that gaming is one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of our time. No matter what kinds of games you love playing, here are the 10 best game recording software!

Why is gaming recording so important? As any seasoned gamer knows, it can take a long time to make the most of video games. If you just start playing a game cold, without any prior experience with it, your experience will most likely end up in frustration.

Since video games do not come with instructions, it can take the average first-time player some time to figure out how to play his or her new game.

Gamers have found a way around this that avoids frustration and makes playing games a lot more enjoyable a lot quicker than it otherwise would. I am referring here to gaming video tutorials.

Gaming video tutorials have become a hugely important part of the ever-growing online gaming community.

“Playing video games is something I enjoy in my spare time. I’m a gamer, always have been.” – Kevin Garnett

And this is where game recording comes in. If you are interested in recording your gaming session and create a tutorial for other, less experienced, gamers, you will need to right tools with which to do so.

The good news is that there is a lot to choose from. So many awesome pieces of software out there would allow you to create great tutorials. Having said that, it can get difficult which one to get precisely because they are so many great choices out there.

In this article, I will review the 10 best game recording software for you to consider which one would work for you. A personal decision of sorts, but here are some awesome choices for your consideration:

Open Broadcaster Software

The first option in our list is the Open Broadcaster Software.

This option is open-source. It has everything you would ever need and a simple and useful interface to boot.

Using this could not be simpler; there are no special settings for you to worry about. Making great recordings is only always one click away.

Apart from making your own recordings, you can also save video content from many popular streaming platforms for gaming tutorials, including the following:

What formats does the Open Broadcaster Software allow you to record in? This option lets you record both in FLV and MP4 formats.

It is capable of doing this because it would use the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). This is what allows it to create high quality recordings.

Open Broadcaster Software

The Open Broadcaster Software has many great features, including the following:

  • Picture in picture mode.
  • Push to talk mode.
  • Custom watermarks.

This might surprise you, but you can get all this awesomeness for free. There are no subscription fees or premium version for the Open Broadcaster Software.

The Open Broadcaster Software is compatible with the following operating systems:

Although there are no versions for Linux or Mac OS X, these should be coming relatively soon.

Action!

Before I go into all the different features of Action! I have to mention that, unlike the Open Broadcaster Software, this option is not available for free. There is a free trial period for you to test it out but after that you would have to pay around 30 USD for home use or around 50 USD for commercial use.

Having said all that, if you do not mind paying for software, here is what you should know about Action!

Action

This option also uses your computer’s CPU but somehow does not put so much pressure on it.

Apart from making your own recordings, you can also save video content from many popular streaming platforms for gaming tutorials, including the following:

Another really cool feature Action! has is that it allows users to easily share anything they create or saved with their friends on Facebook or on YouTube for the whole wide world to see.

You can also edit your videos in any way that you think necessary. You can crop your recordings or add different visual effects that would let you make the most of your recordings.

Other features include a time shift modes (although limited to 10 minutes). 4K recording, MP4 or AVI 2.0 output file format, among others.

Action! is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10

Shadow Play

This piece of software, known as Shadow Play is an Nvidia Geforce product. Because this product was created by the same manufacturer that also makes GPUs, Shadow Play uses the exact same technology.

This is great because, like Action!, Shadow Play also does not put too much burden on your computer’s GPU.

The best thing about it is that, unlike Action! Shadow Play comes at no cost whatsoever.

Shadow Play

But what really makes this option worth considering is that it operates two different modes:

  • The Shadow Mode.
  • The Manual Mode.

So, what is the difference between the shadow mode and the manual mode? The Shadow Mode automatically records for 20 minutes of game play but it does so continuously. What this means is that you can play for as long as you wont while using this mode but every time 20 minutes are up, Shadow Play will continue to delete anything that happened before the last 20 minutes of game play.

If, however, you use the manual mode, you can decide exactly what you would like to record for as long as you would like.

Action! is compatible with the following operating systems

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10.
  • Windows XP.

Bandicam

Bandicam costs around 40 USD for a single license or around 60 USD for two licenses.

One of the best things about Bandicam is how easy it is to use. So, if you have no experience using any recording software before, this might just be the right option for you. At least, it would be worth considering.

Bandicam

You can choose the resolution of your recordings up to 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition).

Unlike the other options that I have discussed so far, Bandicam does not allow its users to stream game play live.

The limit for any recording is as high as 24 hours straight when you can either do manually or schedule before hand.

Sharing your recordings on YouTube is only a click away.

Bandicam is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10.
  • Windows XP.

XSplit Gamecaster

XSplit Gamecaster lets users both stream and record but it is actually a lot better for streaming than recording. This does not mean that recording. Far from it, it just means that the features that it includes work better when you stream.

Recording could not be any easier; it is just one click away.

What are the main features of XSplit Gamecaster?

  • Watermarks
  • Picture in picture mode.
  • Integration with social media networks.
  • Video annotations.

There are two separate monthly subscription but you can also use the free version forever but you will not have unlimited access to all the features.

XSplit Gamecaster is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 10.

D3DGear

D3DGear

D3DGear is great because you do need to set it up. Anyone can start using it straightaway. All the videos you record using it would be automatically compressed. The advantage of this is that you will save space even as you record.

Unlike other options, the D3DGear only puts very little pressure on your computer’s CPU or GPU.

Among its many cool options, D3DGear comes with a microphone and you can also share your recordings easily about a host of different platforms.

D3DGear is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10.
  • Windows Vista.
  • Windows XP.

Dxotory

Dxotory

Simplicity is what makes Dxotory such as great alternative. But that is not all. With Dxotory you will be able to make videos to a high standard of quality. Notice, however, that the recordings you’d make with this, will take up a lot of spce.

There are two versions: a free one and a premium one that costs around 32 USD.

Dxotory is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10.
  • Windows Vista.
  • Windows XP.

Fraps

Fraps is very similar to D3DGear. The main difference between the two is the interface, which may be the only reason why you would choose one of them over the other.

One of its main features is that Fraps allow its users to customize frames.

Fraps is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10.
  • Windows Vista.
  • Windows XP.

WM Capture

WM Capture

WM Capture is very different from all the other options in this list. It is not, strictly speaking a game recording software. Why? Because it just captures everything on your screen.

So, you can use WM Capture for many different things. You can choose when you would like it to capture by scheduling your own recordings.

There is a free trial period but WM Capture costs about 40 USD.

WM Capture is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7.
  • Windows 8.
  • Windows 8.1.
  • Windows 10.
  • Windows Vista.
  • Windows XP.
  • Mac OS X.

Windows 10 Game Bar

Windows 10 Game Bar

The last option is only available for Windows 10 users. It does not require any installation because it comes built-in with Windows 10.

If you have a Windows 10 computer, this is all you might need to use. In fact, I’d recommend you try it out before going for something else.

The Windows 10 Game Bar let users choose between standard and high quality recordings.
