How to Fix “KMode Exception Not Handled” Error

Out of the several technical glitches or system errors that can occur on a PC, one problem stands out. A repeated issue has crept up on the internet with queries to resolve it, and why it may be reoccurring, That reoccurring question is about the KMode Exception Not Handled error. Now, this error is not a severe or irresolvable problem, however, you need to follow the right steps, in the specific sequence, to be able to remove it.

Before we start, you must understand the error and how it occurs in any Windows-enabled PC.

Understanding the “KMode Exception” error

The KMode Exception error occurs when one of the applications has corrupted, and the error handler of the operating system is unsure of the exact problem. However, the Windows error handler can only point that some major problem has occurred and that it is causing system failure.

The further technical analysis of why the error exists can be a bit too tricky. To put it simply, when some applications overlay the memory of another application, it leads the software to crash, or if that not, several failures occur. Most of the time, the problem turns out to be related to a driver file. However, in case it becomes a blue screen error, the system would crash altogether. 

KMode Exception Not Handled

Also, it is crucial, whether you are using Windows 10 or an older version, if the blue screen doesn’t let you boot to the Windows screen to be able to use below mentioned fixes, boot using the Safe Mode first, and make the necessary changes there.

Fixing the error

1. Disabling the Fast Startup

A lot of times, the Fast Startup feature of Windows 10 can be a reason behind this error. Fast Startup is an added feature of Windows that helps in faster recovery from Hibernation mode or a simple shutdown. However, the glitch in this feature is that with faster recovery, it also loads back in any pre-existing driver related problems.

Hence, disabling the Fast Startup feature can help your system stay up for a longer duration, and even resolve the error. To be able to do so, below are the steps you must follow:

  • In the Windows search bar, look up Control Panel.
  • Click on the System and Security option, followed by Power Options.
  • From the menu on the left, click on Choose what the power buttons do.
  • If a pop-up box prompts, click on the Change settings that are currently available.
  • Next, under the Shutdown settings tab, untick the box against Turn on Fast Startup option.
  • Once completed, click on Save changes.

After disabling the Fast Startup feature, if the KMode Exception error still occurs, or if you wish to fix the issue without having to disable it, try using the next option. 

2. Working on the corrupt driver

It is common knowledge that most of the time, the KMode Exception Not Handled error is due to a driver problem. Hence, the solution is to update the driver. To resolve this problem, the first thing to do is to find out which driver is causing difficulty.

Although it depends on the system configurations, in a Windows-based PC, it is easier to detect the root cause of the problem, i.e., the problematic driver. As soon as the blue screen shows up, an error will display on the screen stating the error code: Error: Kmode_Exception_Not_Handled, and a name after the error in brackets. That latter bit is the name of the problem-making driver that needs to be updated.

Before starting, search the driver’s name to check the hardware that it is used for. Once that is confirmed, follow the below steps:

  • In the Windows Search bar, type Device Manager, and click on the corresponding entry. 
  • Look up the corresponding hardware against the driver error, and right-click on it. Select the Update driver option from the drop-down.
  • Next, select Search automatically for updated driver software option, and wait for the procedure to be completed.

In case that does not help, check the manufacturer’s website for the motherboard to confirm if a newer version of the driver has been released online.

You can also simply look up the hardware online to verify if the driver is for an external card or different hardware. If that turns out to be the case, simply download it and update the driver manually, using the Browse my computer for driver software option, instead of Search automatically for updated driver software option, in the aforementioned steps. Even though it may take some time to finish the complete process, however, once done, your PC will be error-free.

3. Check the RAM

In case both the above fixes didn’t help you and you are still facing the same error again, the possibilities are that this may be a hardware related problem. And if that is the case, the root cause is most likely the RAM. However, since we cannot be sure yet, using the Windows memory diagnostics applications, we will check that.

  • In the Windows search bar, search Memory Diagnostic. From the results, click on the corresponding option.
  • Once you are sure, click on the Restart now and check for problems option. Also, if you need to save any work, in that case, select the Check for problems the next time I start my computer option.

After following the above steps, wait until the scan completes during the reboot. Once completed, if you still face any hard errors, it is very likely that the RAM is faulty, and hence causing the error. To be sure of that, try placing the RAM again, to check the connection. Even if that fails, the problem is with the problematic stick, and hence should be replaced.
